Mackinac Island

60 low / 75 high

I don't know where to start. We took the 905 am ferry to the island yesterday. The weather was beautiful for a day of touring. The first thing you notice is the thousands of bicycles along the streets and most of them unlocked. The only motorized vehicles are emergency vehicles so everyone rides a bike or a horse. There were not to many people upon our arrival so we bought tickets on the horse drawn carriage tour. The first leg was a 2 horse carriage with a young man driver and guide telling us a lot of history of the island as well as local landmarks. Later we transferred to a 3 horse carriage which took us through the state park area which occupies most of the island, We departed this carriage at Fort Mackinac where we had lunch on the terrace overlooking the bay and then toured the fort. Afterwards we split from Ron & Jan and reboarded the 3 horse back to where we first boarded it and transferred to the 2 horse again for the trip back into town. There we picked up our bikes and rode amongst the hundreds along the southern shore. We had been told not to dock over here for various reasons but wished we had. Even tried the marina thinking we would come over Sun. but they were full with a waiting list. All in all it was a great day that we thoroughly enjoyed.
