When I woke yesterday morning at 5 am it was beautiful out and still dark. A short while later I went up for a shower and when I came out we were completely fogged in. As the sun came up it got worse. We had planned to leave at 7 am but that quickly came and went as you could hardly see the boat parked next to you. About 8 it started to lift so we decided 830 would be the new departure time. As soon as we left the marina we were back in dense fog. Ron was leading and we just tried to keep him in sight. So using the radar to see other ships the chart plotter to navigate and the fog horn sounding every 2 minutes we plugged along pretty slow. There were quite a few very small boats out fishing and we encountered 1 very large ship coming up the channel that we moved over for. He passed 1/2 mile from us and we never saw him. Ann was very nervous not being able to see but after a while learning how to interpret what she saw on the radar along with the charts and the plotter she quickly gained confidence. The fog lasted for about 4 hours and started to lift as we approached Mackinac Island. This is a must see and we'll take the ferry over today.
