Escape from New York

Today the 3rd, is our 12th day at Shady Harbor marina. Since it doesn't appear that the Erie will reopen for at least 2 weeks and to avoid becoming permanent residents, we fled the state Mon. Our original plan was to stop in Brewerton, NY on our way north and go back to Maryland and bring our car up so we would have it at the end of the summer. With the canal still closed we have decided to do our route backwards or counterclockwise starting with Lake Champlain and finishing in Brewerton. Soo, Sun. we rented a car and early Mon. we drove down to Solomons, picked up our car and returned the rental to Baltimore. It was a horrendous drive from here south on the NY thruway to Mahwah, NJ, then around Newark to the NJ turnpike and finally down I 95. The tolls alone were almost $30, the traffic was horrible and at least 4 times the rain was so hard we slowed to 30 mph. Our 6+20 trip turned into 7+45. We took a different trip back tue. to avoid all interstates and had a great drive. Below are some pictures of the Erie that were taken by Fred of Tugg 44 who lives north of Waterford.

This is the canal at Little Falls with a normal and flooding from late last week.

One of the locks damaged by debris.

Debris stacked up at the same lock
