5 Locks and we're done for now past #12

We decided to stay in Ft. Edward for another day as the weather forecast was not good. We rented a car and drove north into the Adirondack Mountains to the Village of Lake George. The lake is some 32 miles long and was used in the 1700's to move things from Lake Champlain to the Hudson River.

The beach!

A very old home along the lake.

The British and the French had many battles in this area to maintain control  of the waterways and several forts were built. One is Ft. William Henry. The have reconstructed the fort and have a museum there.

The young recruits!

From there we drove south through the mountains to Saratoga Springs. We did go to the racetrack but it is built so you can't see the actual race surface unless you are in the stands. It seems many towns today are adapting an animal as the town mascot and Saratoga is among them. Big horse statues on every corner.

Wednesday night we had 8 boats at the wall in Ft. Edward so Thursday morning we let the first rush head into Lock#7 before we left.  Even so we had a wait at the approach wall of several locks. It was a beautiful trip with initial cloudy skies but the sun coming out later. Very narrow in some spots.

All loopers have heard of Fred of Tug 44. Here is his boat and house just above Lock #7.

This house had a for sale sign on it!

One of the lock walls where we waited.

The position keeper.

After 4 locks, there is no #10,  we approach the town of Whitehall and Lock #12. This is the last lock in the Champlain Canal and we are staying in a marina just on the north side.

Lock #12 entrance.

Just before dinner we heard a lot of commotion off our right side. Looking out we see the finger pier with this big boat on it had broken loose and was crushing the small boat next to it. Some fast reactions and a lot of screaming and muscle and the use of the small boat they got it  pulled over and tied up. Eventually they towed the finger pier across to the other side of the waterway. Enough excitement!! About 8 o"clock the air conditioning guy showed up and with 15 minutes we had the main unit running again.

I woke up this morning to a cool 64 degrees and a beautiful sunrise. We'll stay here tonight and head north tomorrow.
