Hawkesbury, On.

We got to the entrance of the lock at 9 am for a 10 am opening. Just as the gates opened 2 large boats came screaming up the approach canal and tried to bypass everyone in line. 1 succeeded so we waited another hour to lock through. It turned out for the best as there were tstms that crossed ahead of us enroute to the next lock. All we got was some light rain. The Carillon lock is amazing, 65' lift. We arrived in Hawkesbury about 430 pm. Walked into town for dinner and stopped at Tim Hortons coffee for this free wifi. Hope to get off early tomorrow with a stop at Montebello, then maybe to Ottawa. Will post pictures when able.

Enjoying Sainte Anne's

Friday we wandered around this little town looking for a post office. I had checked the internet and thought we knew where to find it. Finally asked a guy who said he was headed there himself but it was closed. A drug store down the street also does mail service so Ann did get her cards mailed. Next a 4 block walk to the grocery to reprovision. I had a leisurely afternoon with a nap and people watching while Ann looked for a beauty shop to have her hair cut., She got an appointment for Sat. Lots of boats around back and forth through the lock and stopping at the restaurants.

Condos across from us.

The wall and walkway.

Sunrise.

Sat. we were off to the market again to get a few things we forgot. We put clothes in the laundromat to wash on the way.  The washers were $5 for a medium load but the dryers were .25 per minute so we brought the clothes back to the boat and ran the generators and used our dryer. We spotted a farmers market at the far end of the city dock and stopped on the way back to the boat. Bought a loaf of fresh bread and some squash for dinner. We were amazed at the the number of boats that they put into the lock at one time so we walked up to watch. Ann got her hair done and I got a nap before dinner.

Saturday afternoon stroll.

Off to the lock.

Our Chinese laundry!

The lock with floating dock. The next 2 have this.

Group hug! 19 boats.

Just down from us we saw them setting up a stage with lots of tables. It turns out we had a concert in our backyard for the evening. Not to loud and very pleasant music. It's supposed to rain today so the lockmaster doesn't expect as much traffic as yesterday. We plan to lock through later today and stay at the wall on the other side tonight so we can get an early start tomorrow. The first locking time in the morning is 10 am.

The big ship locks!

We left Thur. morning headed for Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue about 34 miles away. First we had 2 major shipping locks to go through. We arrived at the first lock just behind an ocean going freighter so we joined the wait with about 12 other boats. Commercial traffic takes priority in these locks and we can't lock through with them.

The wait was about 2 hours and when we got the green light everyone moved into position with the bigger boats against the wall and the smaller rafted alongside. The lockmasters drop ropes to the boat against the wall and they are expected to maintain position of the raft.

The wait.

In the lock.

After being raised up, it's ready, set, go! The smaller go fast boats take off and wake all of us trawlers. I think we had 6 of each. We are now off to the second lock, St. Catherine.

Rafted up again.

Shortly before 6pm we arrive in St. Anne's. The city docks here can hold about 35 boats along both side as you approach the lock. It was packed so just like a parking lot you just wait until someone leaves. We were fortunate and did not have to long. We got a space on the city side that is lined with restaurants. It's a lovely place.

The city dock.

Icing my sore knee!

5 am Friday.

We had dinner with John and Barbara from Go along with their friend who joined them in Montreal. Very pleasant!

Here are some pictures I couldn't post the other day.

Montreal

We made it to Montreal on Monday the 22nd. The marina we are at does not have wifi so we rely on free spots while in town. We are having a great time. Bought tickets on the double decker hop on & off bus yesterday and traveled all around the city. Today we used it to get to the metro and went out to the Olympic Stadium and Botanical Gardens. Then back to Atwater Market for some great cheeses, breads and fresh vegetables. Pictures of everything to follow when I take the computer to a coffee shop maybe later in the week. We are off tomorrow to St. Ann Bellivue. Two big locks for ocean going freighters to pass through first. We plan on spending a few days there until they make us leave. Weekends are bad to travel and find a place to stay as the summers here are short and people take advantage of their time.

Almost to the St. Lawrence

When I got up yesterday morning it was 61 degrees out. The day stayed in the high 60's until late in the afternoon. Beautiful weather! The lock wall was full for the night with 4 other boats. The lock opens at 9am so we were ready to go but we were packed so tightly we had to wait for the others to leave. The first 2 departed southbound but the one in front of us did not. Ann started talking to them to see if they were northbound and they said no but advised us that there were 6 boats locking up from the basin southbound that we would have to wait for. These last 3 locks are together as stairs. They also told us of a marina on the river to stay at and gave us some tips on the anchorage that we will stay at tonight. They live just above it.

Looking down to the basin from lock #3. You can see lock #2 just below the gate.

Yes it is a palm tree in a pot!

It was very busy on the river being Sun. and no one slows down for anybody so we were waked by some very big boats. We also had the cable ferries to watch for. You can't pass close in front or back of them for the cable. Each town had an ornate church with steeple.

Cable ferry.

Lots of float planes.

Our last lock on the river was Saint Ours. We had planned to spend the night at the free wall but upon the advise of our neighbors on the wall we pressed on to Marina Parc Bellerive. It is also an RV park and has an onsite restaurant where we had dinner as well as a marine store where I replaced a fender that blew out a few days ago

In the Saint Our's lock.

Marina Parc Bellerive.

Ann had to try local food. Poutine a la saucisse fumee! Fries with sausage and gravy with cheese curds.

When I got up this morning we are fogged in and 54 degrees. Here are a few pictures of Charis taken by John on Go.

Today we will head for an anchorage about half way to Montreal and we should be in the city tomorrow. Happy birthday Ken!
