Kilkenny Marina

20 May 2015    68.1 sm today

We departed at 630 am yesterday to time close to high tide for passing Mud River which is a notoriously shallow river. We had no problems at all. The intercoastal here winds back and forth and is lined with marshes. It's also infested with horse flies. After swatting for a while we finally put up the screens on the doors. We crossed 3 sounds today which are entrances and exits to the ocean. This is where the tidal current is the strongest and on one side you get the tide behind you giving extra speed but on the other it is against you slowing you back down. After crossing one we were entertained by several groups of dolphins. There are only a handful of marinas along this stretch from St. Simons to Savannah. Kilkenny is about 2 miles off the intercoastal and has room for just 4 boats our size. It's old with rickety docks that reminded us of some on the rivers last year. We arrived just as a rain shower did so we held off the docks for about 10 minutes until it passed. There is a great restaurant here called Marker 107. Dinner was delicious.
