Fernandina Beach

17 May, 2015    31 sm today

We spent the last few days visiting with family in Jacksonville. It was a wonderful time. We headed north again this morning at 800 am. As we travel up the east coast we have to deal with currents and tides. For example the first bridge we had to go under had up to a 4kt current against us but we had to time the tides near Frenandina Beach so that we would have enough water beneath us to pass the shallow spots. Fernandina has a 7' tidal range today.

The bridge with the current.
The weather was again beautiful. The scenery changing from the lower intercoastal waterway. We now have broad expanses of marsh land probably due to the greater tides. We crossed over the mouth of the St. Johns River just outside of Jacksonville which has a very busy port but didn't see any big commercial ships.

Looking out to sea crossing the St. John's River.

Sister's Creek bridge.

We proceeded north with only some small boat traffic. It was Sunday and we expected much more. The intercoastal and winds around quite a bit. It was a beautiful day on the water.

These docks looked almost a 1/2 mile long.

We got caught here as the RR bridge closed for a train at Amelia Island.

We arrived at Fernandina Harbor Marina about 1230. After lunch we walked through the town. We've been here twice before so it was fun seeing things again.

Again the tide range yesterday was almost 7'.

Low tide & mud.

High tide.
