We left Westport this morning at 0835 and headed to Newboro Lock where we are at the highest point on the canal at 407.5 feet above sea level. This is the first lock that we start down on. All so far have been going up. This is much easier on us as we just hand our lines to the lock staff and they loop them around the cables. We went through some very narrow channels.
Sunrise.
Bye to Westport.
Narrow!!
Chaffeys Lock was next, then on through some more lakes and narrows to Jones Falls.
Looking back at the first of 4 Jones Falls locks. #39
Another view of it.
The is 1 lock above a turning basin and 3 together below the basin. The drop is 60' total. at the very bottom sits the Hotel Kenney and they control the dock space. The hotel was built in 1877 and has been run by the same family for 120 years.
After arrival we walked the circle back up around the locks and the dam which was built along with the locks in the 1830's. It was the tallest dam in north america when it was built.
The dam.
Later this evening we will have dinner in the hotel with Peter and Maureen from duddon Pilot. It's reservations only for the 4 course meal with 3 choices for $34.95 each. Oh well, we can say we did it!
On the dock.
The hotel garden.
