Hilton Head day 2

24 May 2015    0 sm today

Today was a leisurely day. It started with a climb some 90' up to the top of the lighthouse. The view from there is spectacular. After lunch we took another trolley ride to a different part of the island.

View of the harbor from the lighthouse.

The famous 18th hole from the RBC tournament. It's being remodeled.

Harbour Town Yacht Basin, Hilton Head, SC

24 May 2015    27.4 sm today

We left Isle of Hope at 800 am and had a beautiful but windy day traveling. The only surprise came as we transited Elba Island Cut, a narrow area between 2 islands. Of in the distance and out towards the ocean we saw a huge container ship coming into the Savannah River towards us. We could only see the top of the ship as the rest was obscured by the island so there was really no way to tell how far away he was. I decided to slow down because we had to cross the river heading north. Glad I did because a few minutes later we both came around the northern tip of the island. He passed in front of us and we were able to safely cross. Again we saw many dolphins.

Leaving Isle of Hope.

He won!

We arrived at Harbour Town around 1130am. After docking we walked around and had lunch. The marina is a large bowl shaped harbor surrounded by the Sea Pines Resort. It's a beautiful area with many condos spread about. Many large yachts in the basin.

The old lighthouse here marks the entrance. There is also a small beach area.

Later we took a trolley ride out to the beach. Being Memorial Day weekend it was packed.

Isle of Hope day 3 and downtown Savannah

23 May 2015    0 sm today

We finally headed to downtown today taking the 840 am bus for the 7 mile ride in 50 minutes. We booked ourselves on the Old Town Trolley for the 90 minute tour and hop on & off privileges at 17 stops. The architecture in the historic district was wonderful to see. The weather was great with a nice cooling wind blowing. Savannah was established a a buffer between the Spanish in Florida and the rich colony of South Carolina and dates back to 1733.

The old fire bell.

Notice the dolphin downspouts,

Phone booth!

The oldest house in the US.

River street which sits 40' lower than Bay street which is the next one inland.

Walk up to Bay St.

Another walk up.

These buildings were the old cotton exchange.

We had lunch at The Old Pink House.

The cellar is now a tavern.

The wine cellar is in the old bank vault.

These people pay to peddle power this vehicle.

The cotton traders would stand on these walkways and bid on the wagons of cotton as the pass under them.

The waving girl statue. It's said that she would wave to all the ships that came and went from Savannah.
