Back to the USA!!

Before leaving Gananoque yesterday morning I called US Customs to report that we were coming back into the country. No problem, after a few questions we were given an arrival # and that was it. We slipped our lines at 0800 in calm winds and flat water. We wandered through the small channels between islands. Some adorned with mansions and others with small cottages.

We docked at Hutchinson's Boat Yard in Alexandria Bay, NY at 1000. Our plan is to get the boat settled and take the ferry across to Boldt Castle just a 5 minute ride away. George Boldt was the most successful hotel magnates in the US in the late 1800's with properties such as the Waldorf Astoria in NYC and the Bellevue Stratford in Philadelphia. He also owned several islands here on the St. Lawrence. Heart Island is where he was building the castle for his wife but she died before it was finished. He abandoned construction and it sat for many years. Eventually the Thousand Islands Bridge Commission acquired the island and have been restoring it over the years. It's a work in progress with much of it still closed.

The main foyer.

Ceiling above the foyer.

The entrance arch to the island. There are 3 bronze stags atop.

He had his own power house built to supply electricity. It contained the generators.

Across on another island stands his boat house with quarters for the caretaker. It still houses several of his wooden boats.

Side view. The caretaker lived in the round section on the left.

When we returned to Alexandria Bay we strolled through the small and very touristy main streets. Ice cream shops, tee shirt stores, restaurants and gift shops. There were some interesting homes as we walked back to the marina.

We went next door to The Bonnie Castle Resort for dinner on the docks. Good food and good scenery.

This pontoon boat had just been catered (aluminum chests and blue cooler) and were heading over to an island. It took 4 guys 30 minutes to load all the stuff so must have been a big gathering.

After dinner, back to the boat and another great sunset.

This mornings view across to Boldt castle.

A few days in Gananoque, On.

Thursday was very wet here as it rained and the wind blew most of the day, Ann took the time to do laundry and I did route planning on the computer for our last legs of the summer. Friday morning we did boat chores and the afternoon we went to a play at the Thousand Islands Theatre. It was a 2 hour 1 women play titled "The Post Mistress". She was the postmaster in a  Canadian post office. It was a musical comedy and quite enjoyable. Later we had dinner with Greg & Susan from Alegria. This may be the last time we see them until south Florida, They completed the loop several years ago and are just cruising now. They will be home by Thanksgiving. The weather was beautiful again today!

The marina.

Today we are off to Alexandria Bay, NY. and the good ol USA.

Into the Thousand Islands

Yesterday was again a short day as we said goodbye to beautiful Kingston and meandered down the St. Lawrence River again and into the Thousand Islands. We arrived at the city marina in Gananoque just after 2 pm. After lunch we strolled into town and had a look around. On the way into our slip we saw Adagio parked near us and Ron & Jan stopped bye for a short chat. Later Greg & Susan came by in their dingy for a visit. We ate in last night and watched tv. Today is supposed to be rainy so it's laundry day. So glad to have the washer/dryer on the boat.

Another beach! To us Floridians the water is freezing but they are enjoying it.

Playing tourist in Kingston

Here is how I started my day in Kingston yesterday.

We bought tickets for the hop on hop off trolley and off we went. We've found these to be reasonable and the best way to get an overview of a city. The pickup site is right out in front of the harbor and while waiting we noticed these sites.

This hotel was built in 1809 and over the early years was a bar & restaurant with rooms for entertaining upstairs.

The wind vane atop City Hall.

The first stop was the Royal Military College. It was fashioned after West Point and has a lot of history.

This wind vane is a sword.

From there we went to Fort Henry which I'll talk about later. Then back into the city where we got a look at some really old houses.

The Courthouse.

Even a castle!

We got off at the penitentiary museum which is in the old assistant wardens house and right next to the penitentiary. It contained various displays including a mock up of the cells from the 1800's which were like a box with only room to lay down and lots of items that had been confiscated from prisoners.

This is a crossbow made from tooth brushes.

Guns

The front of the penitentiary.

We got off again back at the start point and had lunch then reboarded for Fort Henry. They do a drill reenactment every day at 230 pm. We had a guided tour of the fort and then watched to show. This fort overlooks the St. Lawrence River and was constructed to repel the Americans when they invaded.

The inspection was interrupted by the signal that the Americans were coming.

So they all rushed up and prepared to repel them.

They fired several volleys from the cannons (smoke) and the Americans left.

We ended the day having dinner with Peter and Maureen at a great pizza place. Then gelato!
